SERVICE AND AUTHENTICITY
In 2015, General Manager Michael Wong opened House of Wong in Kapahulu, originally known as China Garden, a well-known restaurant located in the heart of Waikiki in the lobby of the Aqua Waikiki Wave Hotel at the Old International Marketplace. With the loyal team that grew with Michael’s 26 years of management experience from China Garden, House of Wong continues to serve the locals and guests of Hawai’i with the same passion for excellent service.
Using his fluency in English, Japanese, and Chinese, along with the business acumen gained from his MBA and years of work experience in Tokyo, Japan, Michael and his team have served over 10,000 international tour groups and locals, and continues to add to their list of millions of satisfied customers. The secret to the success of both House of Wong and China Garden was Michael’s emphasis on providing top-notch service and crafting personalized experiences for each guest that passed through each of these restaurants -- making sure each visit to Hawai’i is special.
House of Wong’s mission is to provide an authentic Chinese dining experience while creating unforgettable memories from Hawai’i. Our top-notch chefs cook locally sourced ingredients that support the local Hawai’i community into family-style meals from recipes passed down through generations in the motherland.
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Michael began his 26 year management career with China Garden, starting as a waiter moving up the ranks to become manager, and finally a part owner -- all while pursing for his MBA at the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawai’i, Manoa.
In 2013 Michael suffered a brain aneurysm, was hospitalized in the ICU, and was only given a 5% chance of survival. Teammates Joe Wong, Ryan Wang and Randy Chan kept China Garden running while Michael was recovering. After months of hospitalization, physical therapy, and support from the local Hawai’i community, Michael made it his mission to open his own restaurant -- thus, House of Wong was born.
Michael serves as an inspiration to his community through his leadership and commitment to providing quality service to the valued customers at his restaurants. Today, Michael can be seen running 7-10 kilometers around Magic Island or hiking Diamond Head every morning before going to work!
